FAQ's for MSc Perfusion Technology Admissions

  • What is M.Sc Perfusion Technology?

The M.Sc. Perfusion Technology programme is a 2 years postgraduate programme that trains students to work as Cardiac Perfusion Technologists in Cardiac Surgical Units. Students will get detailed knowledge about anatomy, physiology, and pathogenesis of heart diseases. They will get an opportunity to work on a heart lung machine and manage cardiac physiology during the intraoperative period.  They will gain knowledge of the working of echocardiography, basic non-invasive diagnostics, and therapeutic interventional procedures in heart disease intra-aortic balloon pumps. They will be trained to manage ECMO. To develop skills in research, they will have to complete a dissertation on one topic given by a mentor. Students are involved and trained in administrative and record keeping work. At the end of two years, students are competent to work as Perfusionists in Cardiac Surgical Units. They are also eligible to hold academic positions in schools of allied health science and train undergraduate students.

Perfusionists are vital members of the cardiovascular surgical team because:

    • They are responsible for running the heart-lung (cardiopulmonary bypass) machine. The heart-lung machine diverts blood away from the heart and lungs, adds oxygen to the blood, then returns the blood to the body—all without the blood having to go through the heart.
    • During surgery, perfusionists use the heart-lung machine to maintain blood flow to the body’s tissues and regulate levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood.
    • They are responsible for measuring selected laboratory values (such as blood cell count) and monitoring circulation.
    • Under the direction of the anesthesiologist and surgeon, perfusionists also administer medicines through the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit.
  • Why choose M.Sc Perfusion Technology?

Perfusion is a profession that has a high demand. There are approximately 4,000 cardiovascular perfusionists in the nation. The demand for cardiovascular perfusionists is expected to increase, as more people seek medical treatment with the passage of the Affordable Care Act. Founded in 1953, cardiovascular perfusion is still a relatively young industry that is experiencing its first major wave of retirements, opening up new opportunities for recent graduates.

The MSc provides high-quality, research-led education that is focused on the needs and expectations of students interested in perfusion science. The course:

    • Will equip you with enhanced knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of the current approaches and emerging research in the field.
    • Covers advanced physiology and disease states of organs that are affected by cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and thereby relevant to perfusion science; and composition and function of blood and implications of transfusion and use of CPB on function.
    • Provides detailed knowledge regarding pathobiology, epidemiology and symptoms of cardiovascular diseases (coronary artery disease, valve and heart disease, paediatric heart disease) and their current treatments.
    • Emphasizes on the current pre-clinical and clinical research to improve the treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease.
    • Provides a theoretical background in quantitative statistics leading to more advanced knowledge on clinical trial design and management.
    • Provides information on the principles and practical aspects of the currently used techniques in adult and paediatric perfusion science; and the key elements of a well-designed research project.
    • The programme provides a firm theoretical grounding in the basic scientific principles and clinical applications of perfusion science.

In conjunction with work-based practical training, this will provide you with the essential skills for employment or a further degree in this field. In addition, you will also be introduced to key practical techniques that you will require as a perfusion scientist.
