In a progressive move to prepare undergraduates for the challenges of the modern world, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has unveiled its revised curriculum for life skills courses. The updated program, known as "Jeevan Kaushal 2.0," aims to equip students with a diverse range of essential skills, including digital literacy, social media management, nonverbal communication, cognitive and non-cognitive abilities, ethics, integrity, and personal finance management.

A Digital Age Leap: UGC's Response to Evolving Needs

In contrast to the previous iteration of the Jeevan Kaushal scheme in 2019, which introduced skills like advanced Google search techniques, yoga, pranayama, and resume writing, the current update takes a decisive leap into the digital age. With a foresight into the evolving demands of the job market, the UGC has incorporated social media education and digital literacy into the curriculum. The objective is clear: to empower students with competencies that are not only relevant but crucial in today's professional landscape.

UGC Chief's Perspective

Discussing the significance of the inclusion, UGC Chief, M Jagadesh Kumar, shared his insights, stating, "Many careers now require some level of proficiency in social media management, marketing, and engagement. Introducing social media education can help students develop skills relevant to their future professions and enhance their employability." Kumar's statement resonates with the rapidly changing dynamics of industries that increasingly rely on effective digital presence and communication.

Holistic Learning Experience

The curriculum overhaul is underpinned by a credit-based structure, with each course carrying two credits. Collectively, the assortment of courses accounts for eight credits, lending a comprehensive framework to this innovative educational endeavour. These courses have been deemed equivalent to foundational courses and are designed to span across various disciplines, offering students a holistic learning experience.

Credit Load and Semester Flexibility

Striving for adaptability and flexibility, the UGC's curriculum emphasizes a balance between autonomy and structure. Students have the liberty to choose between taking individual 2-credit courses in separate semesters or opting for a combination of two courses at once, with the credit load capped at four for a single semester.

Educators of Tomorrow: Ensuring Quality Delivery

Integral to the success of this initiative is the faculty entrusted with teaching these courses. Kumar affirmed that existing educators can be trained to deliver these specialized courses. Additionally, the concept of "Professor of Practice" (PoP) appointments is gaining traction, further enhancing the expertise available to students.

NEP 2020's Vision in Action

With an eye on the future, Kumar highlighted that this curriculum will undergo regular revisions every three to four years to ensure its alignment with the evolving landscape. This commitment to dynamism reflects the UGC's dedication to fostering excellence and empowering students with the skills and mindset essential for personal and professional triumphs, as envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020.
